社会の複雑化や政治形態の変遷は、人類学や考古学をはじめとする諸分野で研究が蓄積されてきました。他方、カテゴリ化か定量化かといった異なる立場の研究をどう統合するかや、ミクロな相互作用がいかにマクロなパターンを生み出すのかなど、残された課題も多く、いまだに議論が続いています。 本ワークショップでは、古代国家形成の比較研究に取り組む有松唯氏、鏡の分配から古墳時代日本の階層化を明らかにする辻田淳一郎氏、いかにして個々人の相互作用から階層化が生じるかをシミュレーションするセドリック・ペレ氏、前方後円墳のビッグデータ解析に取り組むトーマス・カリー氏をお迎えして、こうした話題について議論します。
The Kofun period in Japan has been regarded as the phase of state formation. Recently Yui Arimatsu claimed the “potlatch” hypothesis and challenged this idea. In this workshop, we discuss her apocalyptic idea, methodology to study social evolution, and how to connect the microscopic process and macroscopic patterns of the evolution of political complexity. To this end, we invite Jun’ichiro Tsujita woking on the formation of hierarchy through the distribution of mirrors in Japan, Cedric Perret modeling the emergence of hierarchy through agent-based simulations, and Thomas Currie analyzing the spatiotemporal patterns in the keyhole shaped mounds.
